Under that act homesteaders could claim up to 160 acres after providing proof of farming the land for five years. His tract was described as the SW¼, section 27, township 4S, range 2E of the 6th PM. Certificate number 4451 in Washington County, Kansas, USA.6 On 10 October 1890 Joseph Kingsbury van Petten obtained a land patent for 80 acres of land under the Cash Entry Act of 24 Apr 1820. That act reduced the minimum price of public land to $1.25 per acre, and the minimum purchase to 80 acres, but required payment in cash, not on credit. His tract was described as the W½NE¼, section 25, township 1S, range 26W of the 6th PM. Certificate number 4632 in Decatur County, Kansas, USA.7 He and Harriet Ann Stewart lived in August 1900 in Skafse, Alberta, Canada.
