At some point it appears that Peter changed the spelling of Van Petten to Van Patten, I see it on lots of docments and on his headstone. His daughter Grace maintained the original spelling. He was born on 23 December 1836 in Sterling, Cayuga, New York, USA; Van Petten Genealogy has December 26, 1836 as birth date.3,4 He was the son of Nicholas Veeder van Petten and Ann Ecker.2 He began military service on 5 August 1862 in New York, USA, He enlisted as a private on 05 August 1862 at the age of 26 in Company F, 110th Infantry Regiment New York.
Promoted to Full Corporal on 25 August 1862.
Promoted to Full Sergeant on 25 February 1863.

Certificate number 1335 in Cheyenne County, Kansas, USA.12 He died on 6 February 1905 in Hastings, Adams, Nebraska, USA, at age 68. Van Patten Genealogy lists his death place as Sterling, NY, this is not correct.13,14,3,7,15,4 He was buried after 6 February 1905 in Benkelman Cemetery, Benkelman, Dundy, Nebraska, USA.16
