     He was born on 10 December 1850 in Hannibal, Oswego, New York, USA.3,1 He was the son of Joseph Bullock van Petten and Nancy Maria Kingsbury.2,1 He married Harriet Ann Stewart, daughter of William B Stewart and Jane McDowell, on 30 January 1875 in Doniphan, Doniphan, Kansas, USA.4,1,5 On 25 April 1877 Joseph Kingsbury van Petten obtained a land patent for 160 acres of land under the Homestead Act of 20 May 1862. Under that act homesteaders could claim up to 160 acres after providing proof of farming the land for five years. His tract was described as the SW¼, section 27, township 4S, range 2E of the 6th PM. Certificate number 4451 in Washington County, Kansas, USA.6 On 10 October 1890 Joseph Kingsbury van Petten obtained a land patent for 80 acres of land under the Cash Entry Act of 24 Apr 1820. That act reduced the minimum price of public land to $1.25 per acre, and the minimum purchase to 80 acres, but required payment in cash, not on credit. His tract was described as the W½NE¼, section 25, township 1S, range 26W of the 6th PM. Certificate number 4632 in Decatur County, Kansas, USA.7 He and Harriet Ann Stewart lived in August 1900 in Skafse, Alberta, Canada. They moved with the family to Canada and built a log home that became the Skafse store and post office. The lat and long are based on the homestead record dated Jun 11 1900.8,9 In 1901 Joseph Kingsbury van Petten and Harriet Ann Stewart lived , Duhamel, Camrose, Alberta, Canada.10 In 1911 Joseph Kingsbury van Petten lived on Section 14, Twp 46, Range 20, West of 4th Meridian, Skafse, Alberta, Canada. Lat and Long were obtained through https://www.legallandconverter.com site.11 In 1921 Joseph Kingsbury van Petten and Harriet Ann Stewart lived on 775 Mira Mar Ave, Long Beach, Los Angeles, California, USA.12 He emigrated on 28 September 1921 from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.3 He died on 22 December 1932 in Fort Collins, Larimer, Colorado, USA, at age 82.13 He was buried after 22 December 1932 in Sunnyside Cemetery, Long Beach, Los Angeles, California, USA. Joseph's plot was located in Section 68-1.14
