Sebsequently he served an additonal 2 years in Company C, 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry.5,1,3 On 1 June 1874 Charles M van Petten obtained a land patent for 160 acres of land under the Homestead Act of 20 May 1862. Under that act homesteaders could claim up to 160 acres after providing proof of farming the land for five years. His tract was described as the SW¼ of section 3, township 2S, range 3E of the 6th PM. Certificate number 976 in Washington County, Kansas, USA.6 He married Hannah Smith circa 1881.7,8 He died on 27 April 1917 in St Louis, Missouri, USA, at age 75.4,9 He was buried after 27 April 1917 in Ottery Cemetery, Iron, Missouri, USA.9

I suspect she is this Chella but I have no other data to support the assumption in 1913. She married John William Maloney on 13 November 1917 in Las Vegas, San Miguel, New Mexico, USA.4 She and John William Maloney were divorced before 1940.5 She died on 12 February 1987 in El Paso, El Paso, Texas, USA, at age 90. SSDI reports the date as 15 February but that is incorrect since her obituary appears in the paper on February 14th.6,7 She was buried after 12 February 1987 in Masonic Cemetery, Las Vegas, San Miguel, New Mexico, USA. Chella's plot was located in Section O Row 3.8
