M, #4538, b. 7 August 1687, d. 1740
Claas Lourentse VAN DER VOLGEN (VAN PURMERENT) was one of the early
settlers of Schenectady. His son, Lourens Claas, age 13 was taken captive into Canada at the burning of Schenectady in 1690, where he remained eleven years.
He was given permission to visit Schenectady, promising to return. His
relatives in Schenectady could not persuade him to remain until his sister cut
off his scalp-lock in his sleep. He would not return to his native 'family' in
disgrace and became reconciled to the white man's way and never again returned to Indian habits. He had acquired a perfect knowledge of their language so he was appointed interpreter of the province of Five Nations. He held this office until his death about 1740 - " [Polacek does not name a son for this couple.].
