VAN PATTEN FAMILY BURIAL GROUND, located on the former Jeffers farm, Amsterdam Road (Rt. 5), Glenville, New York. The burial plot is situated some distance southwest of the house on the river flats under a large oak tree. Two unlettered fieldstones. Site visited August 28, 1967. This was the family burial ground of Nicholas S. Van Patten. His obituary, published in "The Schenectady Cabinet", Wednesday, July 15, 1829 reads as follows:
"DIED - - In Glenville, on Wednesday last, MR. NICHOLAS VAN PATTEN, an old and respectable citizen of that town, in the 80th year of his age".
His son, John N. Van Patten, inherited the farm and members of his family are said to be buried where the garage on the Jeffers property now stands. The farm passed out of the Van Patten family in 1848.1 He was born before 21 October 1750 in Glenville, Albany, New York, USA.1,2 He was baptized on 21 October 1750 in Schenectady, Schenectady, New York, USA.2 He was the son of Simon Nicholas van Petten and Jannetje Vrooman.1 He married Engeltje Viele circa 1773 in Schenectady, Albany, New York, USA.1 Nicholas Simon Van Petten served in the Rev. War. (historian - Hanson) "was a captain of the scouts and was with the two Mohawks, Nick and Stoner Nick who killed the Tory, Butler. His grave is on the flats and is a simple marking on field stone" - the farm was left to his son, John Nicholas - from a news clipping. He operated a tavern on Sacandaga Turnpike known locally as "Lower Nicky's" as there were two taverns on that road run by two Nicholas Van Patten's.

He was an excellent penman. first-rate English scholar as well as a student of medicine although he never wished to practice. In 1808 he became one of the first settlers at Sterling,NY. Peter farmed around Ira, Cayuga NY at least until the 1850 census, being listed with 2nd Wife Martha. Later he farmed near Syracuse, NY before moving to Illinois for many years then to Nebraska.4 He was born on 6 March 1818 in Guilderland, Albany, New York, USA.5 He was the son of Dr. Peter van Petten and Lydia Bullock.2,3 He married Naomi Cuddeback, daughter of Jacob Cuddeback and Dina van Etten, on 5 September 1838.5 He married Martha Rosetta van Auken on 6 May 1848.5 On 23 June 1870 Peter Veeder van Petten lived , Steuben, Marshall, Illinois, USA.6 He married Mary Ann Bailey, daughter of Thomas Bailey and Maria Bier, on 13 August 1879 in Washington County, Wisconsin, USA.7,8,9 On 1 March 1895 Peter Veeder van Petten and Mary Ann Bailey lived , Peabody, McPherson, Kansas, USA.10 On 9 March 1895 Peter Veeder van Petten obtained a land patent for 160 acres of land under the Timber Culture act of 3 Mar 1873. Under this act the applicant had to grow 40 acres of timber on the land, with trees not more than 12 feet apart, for 10 years. His tract was described as the NW¼, section 33, township 3N, range 34W of the 6th PM. Certificate number 790 in Hitchcock County, Nebraska, USA.11
He died on 27 July 1897 in Chillicothe, Peoria, Illinois, USA, at age 79.12,1 He was buried after 27 July 1897 in Yankee Lane Cemetery, Marshall County, Illinois, USA.1,13,14
His estate was probated on 15 March 1898 in Marion County, Kansas, USA.15
