     He was born on 1 January 1890 in Morill, Brown, Kansas, USA.1 He was the son of Joseph Kingsbury van Petten and Harriet Ann Stewart.1 He served during World War I from December 1915 to October 1917 as a Lieutenant in the 49th Canada Battn.2 He died on 30 October 1917 in Passchendaele, France, at age 27. Emery was killed in WWI. He was wounded by a German sniper, recovered and returned to duty and died after being wounded a second time.3,1 He is memorialized in Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial, Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium.      He was born on 13 December 1863 in New York, USA.2,1,3 He was the son of Amenzo van Patten and Almira Winne.1 Eugene appears as a widow in the 1900 US census living with his father Amenzo and a daughter Ethel. It's also possible that Ethel is the daughter of Amenzo. I found no records of a marriage and he lists himself as single in all other census data I found. His obituary doesn't mention Ethel. in 1900.2 He died on 2 May 1951 in Cherry Valley, Otsego, New York, USA, at age 87. His obituary indicates that he was left partially blind from an illness contracted when he was 3 years old.4,3
