Barbara Jean McHenry Pauley Pagen, one of the last members of the original McHenry family, died Monday (09SEP2002) at her home in Beverly Hills. She was 87.
Mrs. Pagen served on many corporate boards, but she remembered her roots.
"She still sang the old Modesto fight song," her son Stephen Pauley said. He said his mother died peacefully at home, but had been in declining health due to a series of small strokes in the last six years.
Mrs. Pagen gave $250,000 over the past 25 years to help restore the McHenry Mansion and talked to a local historian every Thursday to make sure her family history was preserved, a Modesto official said.
She hadn't been to Modesto since the city's 125th anniversary celebration in 1995.
"She was very pleased that her family history was being preserved," said Wayne Mathes, cultural services manager for the city of Modesto.
Mrs. Pagen was married to Edwin Wendell Pauley -- an oil man who ran Pauley Petroleum Co., advised several presidents and was a regent for the University of California system -- from 1937 until he died in 1981. Pauley Pavillion on the UCLA campus is named after her first husband.
She also was married to William R. Pagen, an oil executive who was chairman of Pauley Petroleum Co. after her first husband died, from 1985 until he died in 1993.
Mrs. Pagen, known as Bobbe Jean McHenry in her younger days, was born on Oct. 8, 1914 in Modesto.
Her great-grandfather, Robert McHenry, was an influential banker and rancher. He built the McHenry Mansion on 15th Street in 1883 and also founded the Modesto Irrigation District.
She was raised on the McHenry's Bald Eagle Ranch on Crawford Road, which her grandfather Oramil McHenry built in 1881.
She graduated from Modesto High School and later earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
Mrs. Pagen served on various corporate boards, including Pauley Petroleum and Bayou Oil.
She served on many foundation boards, including the Brain Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles, the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California at Berkeley, the John Douglas French Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease and the Los Angeles Orphanage Guild.
She was on the board of trustees for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the International Visitors Council of Los Angeles and was past president of the Edwin W. Pauley Foundation.
And she was actively involved with the Chancellor's Associates, which raises money for UCLA, and the Sproul Associates, which raises money for UC Berkeley.
Mrs. Pagen is survived by three children, Susan Pauley French, Stephen McHenry Pauley and Robert Van Petten Pauley; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at All Saint's Church in Beverly Hills.
Donations may be made to the McHenry Mansion Foundation, P.O. Box 642, Modesto 95353; or to the Douglas French Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease, 11620 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 270, Los Angeles 90025.
* Barbara Jean McHenry Pauley Pagen, who served on the boards of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Los Angeles Orphanage Guild and the John Douglas French Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease and was a charter member of the Music Center's Blue Ribbon 400, has died. She was 87.
Pagen died Monday at her home in Beverly Hills.
Born Bobette Jean McHenry in Modesto, Pagen earned a bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley, where she served as president of the Class of 1936.
A year later she married Edwin W. Pauley, who became one of the nation's wealthiest oilmen, an advisor to presidents and a longtime member of the UC Board of Regents.
He donated $1 million to help develop the UCLA basketball arena that bears his name. He died in 1981.
In 1985, Barbara Pauley married William R. Pagen, an executive with Pauley Petroleum; he died in 1993.
In 1988, the Pagens donated $5 million to UCLA to establish graduate student fellowships in the College of Letters and Sciences.
In addition to her community work and philanthropic endeavors, Barbara Pagen was on the boards of Pauley Petroleum and Bayou Oil.
She is survived by three children, Susan Pauley French, Stephen McHenry Pauley and Robert Van Petten Pauley; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held today at 3 p.m. at All Saint's Church, 504 N. Camden Drive, Beverly Hills.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the McHenry Mansion Foundation or the John Douglas French Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease. on 12 September 2002.1
