This is presumed because his wife Lydia remarried on 30 September 1876 and she is listed as widowed.5 He may have died on 25 January 1928 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA. The obituary for Samuel Dewbrey indicates he opened a blacksmith shop in Chicago in 1870. His obituary indicates he was born in Virginia and he is 85 years old which makes him about the correct age.
So possibly he left his wife Lydia and headed to Chicago and after a few years, she just declared him dead and remarried.6
