He was reported to have been ordered to march ahead of the regimnent due to being 'a little lame'. At some point he got drunk and his nose was bitten off in a fight.4 He married Jane Elizabeth van Patten, daughter of Peter van Patten and Magdelene Relyea, on 4 July 1866 in Dane County, Wisconsin, USA.5,6 He died on 22 November 1893 in Evansville, Rock, Wisconsin, USA, at age 58.2 He was buried on 25 November 1893 in Maple Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Rock, Wisconsin, USA. William's plot was located in Original Block 2, Lot 53, grave 4.7
