He was captured by the South twice during his enlistment. He was first captured at the battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 and confined in Richmond, Va until August 6 when he was paroled at City Point, Va. On May 5, 1864 he was captured a second time at the battle of the Wilderness. He spent time in various Southern POW camps including Andersonville from May of 1864 until he was finally paroled in February of 1865.7,8
He mustered out of the US Volunteer infantry on 12 June 1865 in District of Columbia, USA.9 He married Permelia Adams, daughter of Soloman Adams and Nancy Hogg, on 8 April 1868 in Clarinda, Page, Iowa, USA.5 In 1885 Stephen M Page lived in Polk Twp, Taylor, Iowa, USA. Lat and Long based on location provided in census, TWP 67, Range 35, Section 15.10 He lived on 10 November 1885 in Benkelman, Dundy, Nebraska, USA. His homestead application indicates that he arrived back in Nebraska with the family. He left in October to return to Iowa where the family had been living.

He is living (alone) with Delos Van Petten and his wife Martha and their children Grace and Deroy in the 1885 Nebraska census. Delos and Martha's daughter Grace will later marry Stephen's son Marion.11,12 On 6 January 1890 Stephen M Page obtained a land patent for 157.76 acres of land under the Homestead Act of 20 May 1862. Under that act homesteaders could claim up to 160 acres after providing proof of farming the land for five years. His tract was described as the SW¼, section 31, township 2N, range 37W of the 6th PM. Certificate number 561 in Dundy County, Nebraska, USA.13 On 25 July 1895 Stephen M Page obtained a land patent for 159.68 acres of land under the Timber Culture act of 3 Mar 1873.
