He was captured by the South twice during his enlistment. He was first captured at the battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 and confined in Richmond, Va until August 6 when he was paroled at City Point, Va. On May 5, 1864 he was captured a second time at the battle of the Wilderness. He spent time in various Southern POW camps including Andersonville from May of 1864 until he was finally paroled in February of 1865.^7,8 He mustered out of the US Volunteer infantry on 12 June 1865 in District of Columbia, USA.⁹ He married Permelia Adams, daughter of Soloman Adams and Nancy Hogg, on 8 April 1868 in Clarinda, Page, Iowa, USA.⁵ In 1885 Stephen M Page lived in Polk Twp, Taylor, Iowa, USA. His homestead application indicates that he arrived back in Nebraska with the family. He left in October to return to Iowa where the family had been living.
