| Capt Johannes van Patten | Capt Johannes van Patten served in the American Revolution From 1776 - 1780. On May 27, 1775, he was elected Captain of the 3rd Company of Schenectady Militia, and on October 20 a commission was issued in his name by the Provincial Congress. In Jan. 1776, he took part in the expedition to Johnstown. On Jan. 14, he was ordered to place guards at William De Graff's, Teunis Swart's and Lewis Peek's home to prevent any unfriendly persons or letters from passing upwards. On MAR177? he signed an agreement with Philip Schuyler for service at Lake George and Ticonderoga. On April 1, 1777, he was elected overseer of highways at Schenectady. He served throughout the campaign against General Burgoyne, was mentioned for bravery by General Gates in the "Battle of Saratoga" and was assigned to carry the news of the British surrender to Albany, according to family tradition. Captain Van Petten's company performed patrol and guard duty throughout his beat during the whole of the war, this being an especially exposed position. In 1778, he was at Switzbergh, in 1779 at Fort Paris, in 1780 in command of a detachment in pursuit of Sir John Johnson. Van Petten resigned from the service towards the close of the war. |

He is also credited as serving as a Private in Colonel Cuyler's regiment in Albany County, New York Militia. I don't know if either or both or correct. I also notice that the DAR referenece (2124) indicates he was born in Guilderland and died in Schenectady which is the opposite of a few other sources claim. There is a colorful story of his arrest and confinement as a Torry sympathiser (in Old Hellerbergh ) prior to his apparent military sevice noted above. |
