Her father had been the chief engineer of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase. Her siblings were Roger Phillips and Edna Phillips Eide. Edna moved to Ohio where her husband, Randolph Eide, was the president of Ohio Bell Telephone Company. Mary Catherine is the grandaughter of a Baron in Connemara, Ireland, named Martin. Mary Catherine was a trained opera singer. Her family moved to San Antonio, TX, when she was 17. In 1925, at age 22, she married William Bullock Stewart, Sr., who was a US Army officer, and dentist, at Ft. Sam Houston, in San Antonio, TX. She had 4 children, William Bullock Stewart, Jr., Emily Catherine, Mary Ellen, and Roger Harvey Phillips (named after her father, Richard Harvey Phillips). She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames Society. She loved to entertain and attend social events, and was very interested in history and geneology. She died in 1978 in Washington, DC, after returning on an emergency flight from Italy, where she had been operated on for the sudden onset of abdominal pain, while travelling with her husband.
