Centre Daily Times (State College, PA) - Saturday, March 19, 2005 Deceased Name: Merrill E. Noble State College PA United States Merrill E. Noble July 25, 1923 - February 18, 2005 Merrill E. Noble died peacefully at home late Friday afternoon, February 18, 2005 surrounded by those he loved. He was 81. Merrill was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico on July 25, 1923, the second son of Merrill E. and Martha Noble. He is survived by his only sister Margaret Bentley, his wife Joy, and son Eric, and daughter Margot and son-in-law Nadir Mousseau and his loving grandchildren: Andre and Isabelle. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Jan Noble, nephews: Mark Bentley, Charles Noble, James Noble and nieces: Ann and Deborah as well as great nieces and nephews. Merrill enlised in the infantry during WWII, returning to complete his undergraduate degree from Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1951, where he continued as a research associate until 1954. He was head of Psychology at Kansas State University from 1962-1967. He served as head of the Psychology Department at Penn State University until 1977 when he stepped down to become a senior professor. He was also a visiting scientist at the Institute for Perception TNO, Soesterberg, Netherlands and a NATO visiting lecturer at several universities. He loved traveling with his wife and together they saw much of the world. He was an avid photographer and had a natural eye for the beautiful and unexpected. He loved golf, fishing and summer vacations with his family. He truly cherished his friends and family most in life. He was a kind and generous spirit, honest, caring and above all he was considerate to everyone he met. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be missed.
