From "Commemorative Biographical Record of the Upper Wisconsin Counties: Waupaca, Portage, Wood, Marathon, Oneida, Vilas, Langlade and Shawano" by Chicago: J.H. Beers & Co. 1895.
FREDERICK P. VAN PATTEN is numbered among the pioneer settlers of Waupaca county, and has been identified with its history since the days when the frontiersmen followed Indian trials through the forest in going from place to place. He was born in Albany county, N. Y., July 20, 1820 a son of Peter and Magdalena (Relyea) Van Patten. His grandparents were Frederick and Elizabeth (Sea) Van Patten, the former of whom followed farming, as did also the father of our subject.
Peter Van Patten had children as follows: Frederick P; Maria, widow of Joseph Lee, of Dakota; Sarah, widow of Thomas Anderson, who was a farmer of Symco; David, a resident of Afton, Rock Co.,Wis; Willard, who died in the army; Hiram, a carpenter, of Evansville, Wis; James, a grain buyer, of Sheldon, Iowa; Peter, of. Evansville, Wis; and Jane, Wife of William Wilcox, of the same place. The father of this family owned sixty acres of land in New York, which he traded for 320 acres in Rock county, Wis., and the family began, life anew in the forest, which was yet the haunt of deer and wolves. Their first home was a rudely-constructed shanty, 16 x 24 feet, through which the rain beat, but in a short time it was replaced by a more comfortable residence. They had brought with them a valuable team of horses, and they traveled by wagon from Milwaukee, but as the roads were in a very bad condition, it required five days to complete the journey. The work of clearing and improving the land at once began, and during the first year a large crop of corn was gathered. Corn meal flour was their principal article used in cooking, but all kinds of wild game could be secured, and the Catfish river, on which the farm bordered, furnished them with fine fish. They had to go thirty miles to mill, and as far as Milwaukee for lumber. The children all remained at home until they reached adult age, but one by one they married and left the parental roof, and the parents afterward went to live with them.
As Frederick P. Van Patten was the eldest of the family, his educational privileges were necessarily limited, and he was early inured to hard labor, passing through all the experiences of frontier life. He was married, February 12, 1846, to Laura Roberts, a native of Virgil, Cortland Co., N. Y., born February 12, 1824, daughter of William and Salina (Ehvell) Roberts. Her father was a tailor by trade, but on account of ill health abandoned that pursuit, and took up farming. In 1837 he removed with his family to Warren county, Ill., where he purchased 160 acres of wild prairie land, which he proceeded to cultivate, making his home thereon until 1846, when he sold, and removed to Dane county, Wis. There he purchased a quarter-section of land, part prairie and part timber, but was not long permitted to enjoy his new home, his death occurring in 1848. His wife passed away in 1872. Their children were Clarissa and Ezra, deceased; James C., of Illinois; Harriet and Ira Norman, deceased; Darius, of Canton, Ill; Mrs. Van Patten; Nancy, who died at the age of fourteen; and Mary, who died at the age of thirteen years.
Our subject and his wife have a family of six children; Charles; Mary, wife of J. C. Quimby; Hattie, wife of Marshall S. Baldwin; Ella; Cassie, wife of Byron Baldwin; and Jennie. The parents are faithful and leading members of the Methodist Church, in which Mr. Van Patten has been steward and trustee, while for thirty years he has served as classleader, and is now Church treasurer. In politics he is a Prohibitionist, and has filled the office of supervisor. Mr. Van Patten has made farming his life work. At the time of his marriage he purchased eighty acres of the old home farm, on which he resided for nine years, when he sold it and became the owner of. 160 acres of land in Springville, Adams Co., Wis. Of that about forty acres were broken, the remainder being in its primitive condition. When the Civil war broke out Mr. Van Patten sold his farm and rented land until about 1866, when he came to Waupaca county, and bought eighty acres of timber land in Section 36, Union township. He was one of the first settlers of that locality, and in its improvement and upbuilding he has borne an important part. His son Charles now conducts the home farm, which he had operated continuously from the time of his purchase until 1883, in that year he retiring from active life, and removing to Symco to enjoy the rest which he so truly earned and richly deserves. He is a conspicuous figure in the history of the community, and the name of Frederick Van Patten deserves an honored place in this volume.
* Born in Albany County, NY, moved to Sacketts Harbor, NY as a small boy. In 1838 the family moved to Rock County, Wi. Moved to section 26 Union township, Waupaca County, Wi in 1866. He purchased 80 acres. Operated the farm until 1883 when he moved to Symco, Wi. Died of old age. published.1 Frederick Peter Van Patten was born on 20 July 1820 in Albany, New York, USA.1 He was the son of Peter Van Patten and Magdelene Relyea.1 Frederick Peter Van Patten married Laura Roberts on 12 February 1846 in Virgil, Cortland, New York, USA.1 Frederick Peter Van Patten died on 31 August 1906 in Symco, Waupaca, Wisconsin, USA, at age 86.1

Van Patten Butte, Van Patten Dam and Van Patten Lake in Baker County, Oregon is named for him.
George Van Patten was in partnership with his wife's parents, Orbison and Elizabeth Elliott, in a saw mill at the Bulger Flat area. They got water out of the river for a mill pond. VanPatten Butte and VanPatten Lake are both named after George. George built a dam at VanPatten Lake with a team of horses. He built this dam to bring water down to Bulger Flat to run the sawmill. While alone and working on the dam, George broke his leg but managed to get out and back home. All of his children were born at Bulger Flat and his wife Rosetta died there giving birth to their youngest son, Fred, who lived and was raised by his grandparents, Orbison and Elizabeth Elliott.
After Rosetta's death, George left the Bulger Flat area and went to the Walla Walla, Washington area for a period of time. Eventually, he returned to Eastern Oregon and homesteaded at the mouth of Dark Canyon on the Burnt River. He took his son Chester with him. Bulger Flat is Northwest of Baker and Dark Canyon is south.
* George's will requested he be buried underneath the White Rocks that were up by Abraham and Sadie La Veirs homestead ** that are at the fork of Dark Canyon and Red Springs Gulch (East fork of Dark Canyon). (Sadie La Veirs and Rosetta were sisters) George wasn't buried there ***, but some holes were drilled in the top of the White Rocks and some coins were placed in the holes as a memorial to George.
(Story told by Gordon Van Patten, April 1998.)1 George F Van Patten was born on 20 April 1847 in Cobourg, Northumberland West, Ontario, Canada.1 He was the son of William Roy Van Patten and Sofia Rachel Dean.1 George F Van Patten married Rosetta S Elliott on 3 January 1878 in Baker City, Baker, Oregon, USA.1 George F Van Patten died on 1 May 1934 in Baker City, Baker, Oregon, USA, at age 87.1

, one of the progressive farmers of Squaw township, whose fine farm of two hundred acres is on section 23, was born in Peoria county, Illinois, on the 14th of February, 1868, and is a son of Robert B. and Sarah A. (Nipper) Van Patten. The progenitor of the family in America was Claus Frederickse Van Petten, who came to this country from Holland and located in Albany county, New York. From him our subject is of the sixth generation removed. In the third generation were several who participated in the Revolutionary war, there being about one hundred of the name belonging to one regiment. while one company of this regiment was commanded by Captain John Van Patten. Robert B. Van Patten, the father of our subject, was born in Cayuga county, New York, March 17, 1825, his parents being Peter and Lydia (Bullock) Van Patten.
George M. Van Patten was fourteen years of age when the family came to Iowa and he grew to manhood upon the home farm in Clarke County, in the meantime acquiring his education in the public schools. On attaining his majority he started out in life for himself and has since devoted his time and attention to farming. In 1897 he came to Warren County and after renting his present farm for a time he purchased it and has since engaged in its operation, having two hundred acres of well improved land under a high state of cultivation. He carries on stock-raising, making a specialty of Percheron horses, shorthorn cattle and Poland China hogs.
In 1891 Mr. Van Patten married Miss Annie Holden, of Clarke county, a daughter of C. C. and Deborah (Cramer) Holden, who came to this state from Illinois in 1878 and located in Clarke county. Her father, who was a farmer by occupation, is now deceased. Of the six children born to our subject and his wife three died in infancy. Those still living are, Nina L., Ethel L. and Loyd H., all at home.
The parents are active members of the Methodist Episcopal church and Mr. Van Patten is a republican in politics. He has filled various township offices in an able and acceptable manner and is now serving as township clerk. Socially he is identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
